A cooktop choice can affect far more than how quickly water boils. In a kitchen renovation, it influences your electrical scope, cabinetry layout, ventilation, appliance budget and the way your family uses the room every day. This induction cooktop renovation review examines where induction performs well, where it requires extra planning, and whether it is the right fit for a Sydney home.

For many homeowners replacing gas, induction is a practical step towards a cleaner, more streamlined kitchen. It is fast, highly controllable and easier to clean than a conventional gas cooktop. However, the best outcome depends on confirming electrical capacity and appliance specifications before cabinetry is ordered or stone is cut.

Why induction suits many renovated kitchens

Induction cooktops heat the cookware rather than the cooktop surface. An electromagnetic field activates compatible pots and pans, producing fast and responsive heat while leaving most of the surrounding glass comparatively cool. Once the pot is removed, the heating action stops.

That responsiveness is one of induction’s strongest advantages. Water can boil quickly, while lower settings can hold a gentle simmer with less adjustment than many older electric cooktops. For busy family kitchens, this can make weeknight cooking more efficient and reduce heat building up in the room during warmer Sydney months.

The flat glass surface also suits the clean lines often sought in a full kitchen renovation. There are no burner caps, trivets or grates to remove and scrub. Spills can generally be wiped away once the surface has cooled, which is especially useful in an open-plan kitchen where the cooktop is always visible.

Safety is another consideration. There is no open flame, and the glass around the cooking zone does not become as hot as a traditional electric element. The surface can still retain heat from the cookware, so sensible care remains necessary, but induction can offer welcome reassurance for households with young children.

The electrical work behind an induction cooktop renovation

An induction cooktop is not usually a simple appliance swap. Its electrical demand is often greater than that of an existing gas cooktop, which needs no dedicated high-load electrical circuit. Before selecting a model, a licensed electrician should assess the switchboard, available capacity, cable route and the requirements of the chosen appliance.

Many cooktops require a dedicated circuit and may need three-phase power, depending on their size and total output. Some models can be configured to operate on single-phase supply with a limited power setting, but this can reduce the number of zones that can run at full power simultaneously. This may be perfectly suitable for a smaller household, while a large family kitchen with frequent entertaining may benefit from greater capacity.

In older Sydney homes, the switchboard may also need upgrades to support new circuits and current safety requirements. This is not a reason to avoid induction, but it is a cost and programme item that should be allowed for at the quotation stage. Discovering it after demolition can create avoidable variations, delays and pressure on the budget.

A well-managed renovation coordinates the electrician, cabinetmaker, stone installer and appliance supplier before installation begins. The cooktop cut-out dimensions, ventilation clearances, circuit requirements and isolation arrangements should all be checked against the manufacturer’s specifications. These details protect the warranty and help ensure the kitchen is completed to Australian Standards.

Ventilation still matters

A common misconception is that induction removes the need for a quality rangehood. Induction does not create combustion gases in the kitchen, which is a major benefit compared with gas. It still produces steam, grease particles and cooking odours, particularly when frying, searing or cooking for a family.

A ducted rangehood that vents outside will generally deliver stronger performance than a recirculating unit, provided the duct path is designed properly. In an extension, this is often straightforward to incorporate early. In an existing home, the route may need to work around structural beams, upper cabinetry, roof space limitations or heritage features.

The rangehood should be sized and positioned for the cooktop, not selected only for appearance. An integrated unit can maintain a minimal look, while a canopy rangehood can provide greater capture area and extraction performance. The right choice depends on the kitchen layout, cooking habits and available ducting route.

Induction cooktop renovation review: costs to allow for

The appliance price is only one component of an induction upgrade. Entry-level units can be relatively accessible, while premium models with flexible cooking zones, integrated extraction or advanced controls carry a higher price. The full cost should also consider electrical upgrades, circuit installation, switchboard work, rangehood changes, cabinetry adjustments and stone benchtop cut-outs.

If the renovation involves removing a gas cooktop, the existing gas connection must be safely isolated by a qualified professional. In some projects, homeowners choose to retain gas for hot water or outdoor cooking. In others, moving fully away from gas may involve further changes to the home’s services. The appropriate scope depends on the property and the owner’s longer-term plans.

It is also worth considering replacement costs over the life of the kitchen. Glass cooktops look refined, but they can be damaged by a heavy impact or inappropriate cleaning methods. Selecting a reputable appliance with local service support and ensuring the cut-out is accurately prepared reduces the risk of problems at handover.

Cookware compatibility and daily use

Induction requires magnetic cookware. Cast iron and many stainless-steel pots work well, while aluminium, copper and glass cookware may not unless they have an induction-compatible base. A simple magnet test is useful: if a magnet sticks firmly to the base, the cookware is generally suitable.

Most households do not need to replace every pot and pan at once, but it is sensible to check existing cookware before committing to the appliance. Flat-bottomed pans make the best contact and deliver more consistent heating. Very small pans may not activate some zones, and oversized cookware can limit access to adjacent zones.

There can be a short adjustment period for people accustomed to gas. Induction reacts quickly, so a setting that works on one cooktop may be too high on another. Once familiar with the controls, many homeowners appreciate the precision. Features such as timers, child locks, bridge zones and power boost settings can be genuinely useful, but only when they suit the way the household cooks.

When gas may still be the better choice

Induction is not automatically the right answer for every renovation. Homeowners who strongly prefer visible flame control, use specialised rounded cookware, or do not want to fund electrical upgrades may reasonably choose gas. In some properties, the cost of increasing electrical capacity can shift the value calculation.

There is also a design consideration. Some clients want a traditional cooking experience in a period home, while others are planning a contemporary, all-electric kitchen. The appliance should support the broader renovation brief rather than dictate it.

The key is to compare like-for-like scopes. A low appliance price is not a true comparison if it excludes necessary electrical work, ventilation changes and compliant installation. Transparent planning gives you a clearer view of the total investment before construction starts.

Planning the right result from the start

The strongest kitchen outcomes are decided early, before final plans, cabinetry drawings and stone templates are approved. Confirm the cooktop model, electrical requirements, rangehood approach and cookware needs during the design phase. This allows the trades to coordinate the work in the right sequence and limits last-minute changes.

For a full renovation or kitchen extension, H.E.A.R can coordinate design, approvals, electrical, plumbing, cabinetry interfaces and finishing trades within one managed process. That level of coordination matters when a seemingly simple appliance decision affects several parts of the build.

An induction cooktop is a worthwhile upgrade when it suits your cooking style, electrical capacity and renovation budget. Plan for the complete installation rather than the appliance alone, and the finished kitchen will be safer, cleaner and better prepared for the way your household lives.
