A bathroom can look finished long before it is protected. Tiles, grout and silicone give the room its visible surface, but they are not the waterproofing system. The membrane installed beneath them is what prevents moisture reaching wall framing, subfloors and adjoining rooms. Knowing how to waterproof a bathroom properly helps homeowners understand why this stage deserves careful planning, licensed trade coordination and quality control.
For Sydney and NSW renovations, waterproofing should be treated as a critical construction stage rather than a quick task completed between plastering and tiling. A failed membrane can lead to swollen timber, damaged ceilings, mould, loose tiles and costly remedial work that often requires the bathroom to be stripped back.
Start with the bathroom design and substrate
Waterproofing begins before any membrane is opened. The layout must confirm the locations of the shower, bath, vanity, toilet, floor wastes and any hob or level-entry shower detail. These decisions affect falls to waste, drainage positions, wall junctions and the extent of waterproofing required.
The substrate also needs to be suitable. Floors and walls must be structurally sound, clean, dry and free from dust, paint, oil, loose material or old adhesive. A bond breaker, reinforcing tape, fabric or pre-formed collar is installed as specified by the membrane manufacturer. It allows controlled movement while maintaining a continuous waterproof barrier. This work is detailed and should never be treated as an optional extra.
4. Apply the membrane to the required areas
The membrane is applied across the floor and up walls in the required wet areas. Shower walls, shower floors, bathroom floors and wall junctions are commonly included, while the height and extent of coverage depend on the bathroom layout and applicable requirements.
For example, a fully enclosed shower, a shower over a bath and a level-entry shower can each require different detailing. The installer should follow the project specification, the relevant standards and manufacturer instructions rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
Each coat must be applied evenly, with sufficient coverage at corners and around penetrations. The first coat needs to cure before the next is applied. Rushing through this stage to bring tiling forward is a false economy.

Tiling is the finish, not the waterproof barrier

The most common bathroom waterproofing problems are rarely caused by one dramatic mistake. More often, they result from several small shortcuts: inadequate substrate preparation, incompatible products, missed bond breakers, insufficient membrane thickness, rushed curing or unrecorded alterations after the membrane is installed.
Homeowners should also be cautious about waterproofing over unknown existing tiles or damaged linings. This approach can occasionally be viable in limited circumstances, but it depends on the condition of the existing bathroom, floor levels, drainage and the proposed system. In a full renovation, removing finishes and assessing the substrate usually provides a more reliable long-term outcome.
A low quote can be misleading if it does not clearly state who is responsible for substrate preparation, waterproofing extent, certification, tiling interfaces and rectification of defects. Transparent scope documentation is as valuable as the membrane product itself.
