A new kitchen can look complete at installation, yet the electrical work behind the cabinetry determines how safely and comfortably it performs for years. Kitchen renovation electrician requirements are not simply about adding a few new power points. They involve licensed design, suitable circuits, appliance specifications, switchboard capacity, safe clearances and documented compliance under NSW rules.

Kitchen renovation electrician requirements in NSW
In NSW, electrical installation work must be carried out by a properly licensed electrical contractor. Homeowners should not undertake fixed wiring, alter circuits or connect hardwired appliances themselves, even where the task appears minor. Work that is hidden behind plasterboard, cabinetry or splashbacks must be safe, testable and compliant before the kitchen is finished.
The work must meet the applicable requirements of the Wiring Rules, AS/NZS 3000, along with NSW electrical safety and supply authority requirements. These standards cover issues such as circuit protection, earthing, cable installation, isolation, outlet placement and testing. The precise solution depends on the home, appliance load and kitchen layout, which is why a site inspection is more useful than a generic allowance in a renovation quote.
On completion, the electrical contractor should provide a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, commonly called a CCEW, for applicable electrical installation work. Start with the appliance schedule, not the power point plan

An induction cooktop may have very different supply requirements from a gas cooktop. Likewise, a compact under-bench oven, a large pyrolytic oven and a combination steam oven cannot be treated as interchangeable placeholders. Some appliances use a standard plug and socket, while others require a dedicated circuit and fixed connection. Manufacturer instructions form part of the installation decision, so final selections should be checked before fit-off.
A capable electrician will assess the expected electrical demand across the house as well as the kitchen. Avoid relying on double adaptors and power boards as a substitute for a properly planned outlet layout. They create clutter, can interfere with access and may place unnecessary demand on a single outlet. Well-located power points are safer and make the kitchen easier to use.
Position outlets before cabinets and splashbacks are locked in
Electrical outlet locations should be coordinated with the kitchen plans, elevations and appliance cut sheets. This includes standard bench outlets, outlets inside appliance cavities, fridge connections, rangehood supplies, pantry appliances and any charging point planned for a mobile or tablet.
The detail matters. A power point cannot be hidden where an appliance prevents access to it, interfere with a drawer runner, sit behind a cooktop or be positioned so close to a sink that it becomes impractical or unsafe. The required clearances and installation method will be determined by the relevant standards, appliance instructions and actual site conditions.
Kitchen islands deserve particular attention. An island may need accessible power for small appliances, but the outlet position should be planned around seating, cabinetry construction and the way the island will be cleaned and used. Pop-up outlets can suit some designs, while side-mounted outlets are often a more durable choice. The right option depends on the cabinetry, intended use and product rating, not just appearance.
Where a splashback is being tiled or made from stone, settle outlet positions before the final measure and fabrication stage. Moving an outlet through a finished stone slab is costly and can compromise the result. Clear drawings and a joint check between the builder, cabinetmaker and electrician prevent this type of avoidable rework.
Lighting should be layered and serviceable
Kitchen lighting needs to support preparation, cooking, cleaning and entertaining. A single central ceiling fitting rarely achieves all four. Most successful renovations combine general ambient lighting with focused task lighting over benches and cooktops, then add feature lighting only where it contributes to the room.
Downlights can provide even coverage, but their placement should be set out around the cabinetry rather than a simple ceiling grid. A poorly positioned downlight can leave the person working at the bench standing in their own shadow. Under-cabinet lighting is useful for task areas, provided drivers and connections are installed in accessible locations for future servicing.
Consider switching from the start. Separate switching for general lighting, task lighting and pendants gives the kitchen more flexibility without adding unnecessary complexity. Dimmers may suit dining or ambient lighting, but the fittings, drivers and controls must be compatible. Smart controls can also be worthwhile, although they should never complicate basic operation for family members or future owners.
Manage water, heat and ventilation with care
Kitchens are not treated in the same way as bathrooms, but water and electricity still require careful coordination. Sinks, dishwashers, filtered-water systems and boiling-water taps can create a concentrated service zone inside a cabinet. Electrical equipment, switches and outlets must be located and installed appropriately for the environment, with the correct separation, protection and access.
Heat is another consideration. Cooktop, oven and rangehood connections must follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions, including any required isolators and clearances. The rangehood electrical supply must also align with the ventilation approach. A ducted rangehood may require coordination through roof or external-wall spaces, while a recirculating model changes the physical scope but not the need for a safe electrical connection.
If the renovation uncovers old wiring, damaged cables or non-compliant work, allow for remedial electrical work rather than concealing the issue. Older homes can contain a mix of upgrades completed across decades. Identifying and addressing risks during an open-wall renovation is usually more efficient than returning after the new kitchen is complete.
Sequence the electrical work with the renovation programme
