The right plan depends on who will use the bathroom now and how their needs may change. A bathroom designed for someone using a wheelchair has different spatial requirements from one intended to reduce slips and falls for an older parent who remains independently mobile. Families may also want a room that works for young children today and supports ageing in place over the next decade.
Before selecting tiles or tapware, consider the practical movements that happen in the room. Can the user enter, close the door and turn comfortably? Is there enough space to transfer beside the toilet or shower? Will a carer need room to assist without being blocked by a vanity or screen?

Choose fixtures that support safe independent use
Accessibility is often won or lost in small details. Fixtures should be easy to reach, operate and clean, without compromising durability or the overall finish of the renovation.
A wall-hung vanity can provide knee clearance for a seated user and makes floor cleaning easier. Its height, basin depth and tap position should be tailored to the user rather than selected only for appearance. Lever-style mixer taps are usually easier to operate than tight twist handles, while a hand-held shower on an adjustable rail gives greater flexibility for seated or standing use.
For the toilet, allow usable space beside the pan where transfers or assistance may be needed. A comfort-height toilet can reduce the effort of sitting and standing for many people, although the most suitable height varies by user. Concealed cisterns create a clean look, but access for servicing must remain practical.
Grab rails should be planned as part of the design, not treated as an afterthought. Quality rails can be selected in finishes that complement the tapware, but their fixing is critical. Walls may require structural noggings or reinforced backing behind the finished surface so rails can be securely installed where needed. Even if rails are not required immediately, preparing the wall during renovation is a sensible future-proofing measure.
Prioritise slip resistance, lighting and comfort
A beautiful bathroom floor is not much use if it is difficult to walk on when wet.
